What Does a Check Engine Light Mean?

At its core, the check engine light is your car’s way of telling you that something isn’t operating as it should. Modern vehicles are equipped with onboard diagnostics systems that constantly monitor engine performance, emissions, fuel delivery, and ignition timing. When the system detects a fault outside normal parameters, it triggers the light.

Not all faults are equal. Some issues are minor, such as a loose fuel cap or a sensor reading slightly outside its expected range. Others are more serious, including ignition failures or fuel system problems that can affect drivability and engine health. The challenge is that the light itself doesn’t tell you exactly what’s wrong—it simply signals that a fault has been detected.

Ignoring the warning can allow small issues to develop into costly repairs. What starts as a minor sensor fault can lead to inefficient fuel use, increased emissions, or damage to critical components. That’s why it’s always wise to have the issue assessed by a professional using specialised diagnostic equipment.
