The customer reported that their BT-50 stalled without warning and would not restart. The engine cranked but sounded uneven, a classic sign of possible internal damage. Given the vehicle’s service history and symptoms, a failed timing belt was suspected straight away.

After removing the timing cover, we confirmed the belt had snapped. On this engine, the timing belt keeps the camshaft and crankshaft synchronised. When it fails, the pistons and valves are no longer timed correctly, which can lead to contact between them.

With the cylinder head removed, further inspection revealed:

The majority of the rocker arms were bent or broken

Valve timing was severely out of alignment

No visible piston damage, but valve movement was restricted

The camshaft and lifters showed uneven loading due to the sudden stop

This type of damage occurs because when the belt fails, the camshaft stops turning while the crankshaft continues briefly, forcing valves to remain open and loading the rockers beyond their design limits.

To restore the engine safely and reliably, we carried out the following work:

Removed and replaced all damaged rocker arms

Inspected and tested valves for straightness and sealing

Checked camshaft lobes and followers for abnormal wear

Installed a new timing belt kit with correct tension and alignment

Reassembled the cylinder head with new gaskets and seals

Set valve clearances to factory specification

Performed full timing and compression tests after reassembly

Once completed, the engine was rotated by hand to confirm smooth operation before starting.

The engine started cleanly with no abnormal noise

Compression returned to normal across all cylinders

Idle quality and throttle response were fully restored

No fault codes or warning lights were present

The customer avoided a full engine replacement thanks to early diagnosis and the fact that damage was limited mainly to the rocker assembly.
